Child Study
The Child Study Team works as an intervention process for students experiencing academic and/or behavioral difficulties in school. Parents are encouraged to be involved in the entire process. Any parent/guardian/caregiver, teacher, or school staff member may refer a child to the Child Study Team if the student is struggling under current circumstances and if pre-existing modifications within the classroom are not deemed successful.
As the school counselor, I ensure that all information on each student is filled out adequately and completely, schedule and run each child study team meeting. Other professional staff involved in the process and serving on the team include our principal, school psychologist, speech/language teacher, our reading specialist, intervention specialist, classroom teacher(s), specials teacher(s), special education teacher(s), and school social workers. On this team, we assist with the development of intervention and support plans.
When a student is referred to the Child Study Team the following process begins:
- A team meeting is conducted with appropriate staff.
- The team uses a problem solving method to develop specific interventions to try to help the student.
- The students progress is monitored and a follow up meeting is held.
Follow-up meeting(s) will determine the success of the interventions, along with shortfalls, if any. We will determine if the child study process is complete, if strategies will be continued and monitored for additional time, and/or the strategies are being altered, or the student is referred to a multidisciplinary team for further evaluation.
Parents and guardians, you may make a referral to the child study team at any point throughout the year. Please email Ms. Domanish at adomanish@npsd.org in order to start the process.
